Step into a rewilding landscape

Track wild European bison in the Tarcu Mountains, where nature leads and wildlife moves freely

BISON TRACKING IN TARCU MOUNTAINS

This is not a typical wildlife trip

This experience is not about checking sightings off a list. It is about stepping into a landscape where nature is returning, and understanding what that looks like in the field.

You might see bison. You might follow their tracks for hours. Or you might simply learn how to read the land.

Each experience is unique — shaped by wildlife, movement, and the changing landscape.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival & Transition into the landscape

Your journey begins with a gradual arrival into the Tarcu Mountains. After settling into your accommodation, you’ll have time to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with the surroundings. Depending on your arrival time, we may take a short walk nearby or simply gather for a relaxed introduction to the landscape and the days ahead.

Day 2 - Into the Wilder Landscape

We begin to explore the wider area, moving through valleys, forests, and open viewpoints. This is a day of orientation, understanding the terrain, observing birdlife, and starting to read the landscape. It’s a gentle step deeper into the wild.

Day 3 - European Bison Tracking

This is the core of the experience. Together with a local guide, you head into the mountains to track free-roaming European bison. The day is shaped by nature — not by a fixed schedule. You may spend hours following signs, moving quietly through the forest, and, with some luck, encountering the animals in their natural habitat.

Day 4 - People, Culture & Landscape

Rewilding is not only about wildlife, but also about the people who live alongside it. Today offers a glimpse into local life — meeting people, visiting villages, and understanding how culture and landscape are deeply connected. It’s a slower, more grounded day.

Day 5 - Departure to Timisoara

We begin the transition back, leaving the mountains behind and heading towards Timișoara.

What do our customers say?

Southern Carpathians were a big surprise. An unknown area for me in which we met huge mountains, amazing views, bears, lynx, pristine forests and lots of charming and welcoming people. The acommodations were cozy, authentic and comfortable and we had different nature and gastronomic experiences that were amazing. I really recommend it.

Having our rewilding nature guide on our side during the whole walk gave so many insights about the bison, so that, even if we could not spot them in the end, we embraced them. What they eat, how they attack trees for various reasons, how they hide and silently blend into the landscape. It's not your usual wildlife watching experience: I call it wildlife feeling instead, because if you learn how to feel, you are connected to them through your senses and imagination.

One of the highlights of our time in Rusca was a bison tracking experience in the mountains. It was both fascinating and educational as we observed the positive impact these majestic animals have on their environment and discovered many signs of their presence. Our adventure culminated in a delightful picnic near an old shepherd hut high in the mountains, where we enjoyed delicious local food amidst the serene wilderness.
